Applications are invited for a Trainee Breast Clinician at Musgrove Park Hospital, part of Taunton and Somerset Foundation Trust.

Breast Clinicians form an integral part of the diagnostic team managing patients with benign and malignant breast disease. This post is part of a national pilot project developed by The Royal College of Radiologists and the Association of Breast Clinicians, and part funded by Health Education England. The aim of the project is to train breast clinicians to a national, standardised curriculum covering all the relevant aspects of clinical skills, risk analysis and radiology necessary to become an independent doctor working in breast screening or symptomatic practice. The training will follow a formalised three-year training path. Upon successful completion of the training, a certified credential will be awarded by the Royal College of Radiologists, equipping breast clinicians with the necessary skills to lead screening services, family history clinics and work in symptomatic clinics.

You will be based at Musgrove Park Hospital Breast Unit, associated with Somerset Breast Screening programme and linked to the local Radiology Training Programme.  You will join an enthusiastic and friendly multi-disciplinary team, including consultant radiologists, consultant surgeons, breast clinicians, and advanced practitioners from nursing and radiographic backgrounds. We provide an innovative integrated surgical, breast screening and symptomatic service.

Applicants must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and be eligible to work in the UK. The minimum entry criteria include evidence of Foundation competences or equivalent within the last 3.5 years but we would welcome applicants with wider experience from other specialties or general practice. For full entry and selection criteria please the person specification.

The Breast Unit:

The Breast Unit provides a comprehensive service including Breast Screening, with approximately 22,000 women screened each year. We receive over 3,000 new symptomatic referrals annually and treat around 400 new breast cancers (symptomatic and screen detected) who are seen in our dedicated breast unit. We also provide an Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Service, performing breast reconstruction using implants and Latissimus Dorsi Flap Breast Reconstruction on site. We have successfully integrated High Risk screening into the NHSBSP and have a dedicated Family History clinic for women thought to be at higher than population risk of breast cancer. We have strong links with Clinical Genetics Services based in Bristol, their clinicians have weekly out patients clinics at Musgrove Park. We use vacuum assisted core biopsy, intra-operative sentinel node analysis (OSNA), and there is planned introduction of Mammographic Tomosynthesis.

The Trust:

Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust provides first class acute and specialist services locally for the population of Somerset. With over 700 beds, 30 wards and 15 operating theatres, we are the largest acute hospital in Somerset, serving a population of over 340,000.

The new state-of-the-art Jubilee Building containing the Surgical wards was opened in 2015. A new surgical block containing General Theatres, ITU/HDU, Surgical admissions unit and Endoscopy suite is planned to open in 2023.

We have links with Bristol and Peninsula Medical schools and are active in the training and education of medical students and Radiology and Surgical Trainees.

Musgrove Park is at the forefront of Acute NHS Trusts in the UK, with CQC ratings of Good and Outstanding, the highest GMC score in the South West for training, and a catchment of over 544,000. Whilst benefitting from this incredible opportunity for professional development, you’ll also get to enjoy the benefits of living in the West Country, ranging from rural countryside to access to some of the UK’s best beaches; all whilst being in easy reach of cosmopolitan centres such as Bath, Bristol and Exeter.

There is no commitment to general radiology or surgery and no on-call requirement.  This is a new post on a fixed term 3 year contract, based on full-time working.
