Consultant Proactive Care of Older Persons Undergoing Surgery (POPS) Geriatrician

Applications are invited from accomplished and enthusiastic individuals with an interest in Proactive Care of Older Persons undergoing Surgery (POPS) and with general geriatric medical experience (GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT) to join our highly regarded, growing geriatric service.

The successful applicant will work within the Surgical and Care of the Older Persons department to provide a POPS model of service to older patients within the surgical specialties.

This is an exciting opportunity to work within our dynamic, innovative and rapidly evolving POPS service which has been delivering quality care to our older, frail surgical patients since November 2016. We established a POPS service within colorectal and upper gastrointestinal surgery which has been hugely successful in improving patient outcomes and achieving the highest NELA Geriatrician input in the South West region. The team have presented their work nationally and internationally and the outcomes of the pilot study was published in April 2018. The POPS team currently includes a Consultant and a POPS Advance Care Nurse Practitioner.

In addition, the applicant is asked to be involved in the general medical on-call as we develop our 7-day services across the Trust. We currently have 11 consultants working in specialist services in POPS surgical liaison, orthogeriatrics and osteoporosis, Parkinson’s and movement disorders, and a front door OPAL service with an OPAL ward within the Acute Medical Unit.

The successful applicant will contribute to expanding our current POPS service to include elective surgery and other surgical specialties.
